Simone Leigh is an American artist working across sculpture, installation, video and performance. Her work draws on historical and cultural references from the African continent, examining how Black women have been represented throughout history. Leigh creates sculptures in materials like ceramic, bronze and plant fibres, as well as video pieces, to explore themes such as identity, care, solidarity and undervalued labour. Through her practice, she reimagines the representation of Black womanhood, bringing to light stories and experiences that have often been overlooked.
