In her latest series, Cui also tackles pressing issues like climate change and environmental politics. In Ceramic Giraffe and State Grid Corporation of China, Beijing (2023), a futuristic headquarters for a Chinese energy company is surrounded by two kissing giraffes, inspired by ceramic figurines popular in Chinese homes during the 1970s. The cracks in the surface were once viewed as imperfections from production, but over time, they’ve become a signature feature of these figures.
The contrast between the organic forms of the giraffes and the cold, glass-surfaced building behind them is striking. Skyscrapers with large glass facades, like the one in this painting, require vast amounts of energy to cool, directly contributing to global temperature rise. Yet, these buildings continue to rise worldwide.
Through this work, Cui highlights the challenges of modern urbanism, drawing attention to the delicate balance between technological growth and environmental responsibility. It invites us to reflect on how society's development is deeply intertwined with its impact on the planet.
