Welcome to a lecture with Marit Paasche

Art historian Marit Paasche talks about Hannah Ryggen’s connection to Pablo Picasso’s artistry, taking as her starting point Ryggen’s well-known work Trojan horse/Picasso blanket (1949–1956). She will also explore how this piece can be linked to antiquity, modernism, and folk art.
The lecture lasts for one hour, followed by an opportunity to ask questions.

Marit Paasche holds a doctorate in art history from NTNU and works as a researcher, writer, curator, and critic. In 2019 she published Hannah Ryggen – Threads of Defiance, which was named one of the year’s best books by Professor Marina Warner in the Times Literary Supplement. It was also highlighted by the New York Times and the Danish newspaper Weekendavisen as one of the best art books of 2019.
Paasche’s most recent publication is Søvn og lykke – Norsk kunst og det moderne gjennombruddet (Sleep and Happiness – Norwegian Art and the Modern Breakthrough). She has curated exhibitions for institutions such as Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, the University Museum of Bergen, Oslo Kunsthall, and Henie Onstad Kunstsenter. In 2027 she will curate an exhibition for Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid.
The lecture is organised in connection with the Hannah Ryggen Triennial 2025, a collaborative project across several art institutions in Trondheim. The triennial explores the theme mater – the Latin word for “mother” – which links biological motherhood to our cultural heritage and the material world. This theme reflects how the maternal is deeply woven into our language, through words such as “materiality”, “matter”, and “Mother Earth”. The Hannah Ryggen Triennial is initiated by Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum.
