With textile-covered dinosaurs and digitally manipulated photographs, Sandra Mujinga explores stories of both the past and the future, addressing questions of solidarity, identity and vulnerability.

The Norwegian-Congolese artist Sandra Mujinga is one of the most significant Norwegian artists working today. Drawing on science fiction, her practice explores the possibilities of creating new speculative fictions and worlds where other forms of life might exist. This exhibition highlights some of the artist’s most recent works.

Silent Flight (2025) was originally created for PoMo’s opening exhibition Postcards From the Future and depicts a twin pair of dinosaur-like sculptures. Their massive scale reminds us of the small role humans have played within nature from an archaeological perspective. At the same time, the fragile construction points to the endangered position of animals in our own time.

The newly acquired 2090 (2023) might be seen as a distant relative of the dinosaurs, perhaps from a near future. The sculpture is wrapped in tangled recycled fabric, evoking associations with a porous skin surface, or perhaps suggesting that the creature is caught in a net.

Shared Breath #2 and #5 (2024) are also new additions to the collection. The works depict digitally processed portraits of Mujinga’s friends and family. Their facial features are blended together to create “new faces”, a response to the rise of deepfakes on the internet. At the same time, the works highlight how many digital image technologies are still not calibrated for people with dark skin tones.

During this period, we are also showing a filmed interview with Mujinga in PoMo Project, titled I Cheer For The Monteres, generously on loan from the Louisiana Channel.
