From the 1990s onwards, Franz West created a series of sculptures designed to engage people by allowing them to touch and even sit on the works. Made from welded aluminium or resin, the sculptures had a fragile, papier-mâché-like appearance. Meeting Point (2010) is one of these pieces, designed for two people to sit together, talk or lie back and reflect on the big and small questions of life.
Many of the sculptures in this series are painted in bright colours and have a snake-like form, reminiscent of clay figures made by children, organs or even excrement. Yes, we’re talking about poo – but don’t be too surprised. One of the works in this series is called Cool Book (2007), a cheeky reference to the Italian phrase buco del culo, meaning "arsehole". The piece is shaped like a large, pink anus, and you’re invited to sit on it as if it were a bench.
