The artworks Sunset B, CL2E354, and CL2 Blue Shadow (2020) are like a mini colour celebration, wrapped up in layers of textured glass. They’re part of Ann Veronica Janssens’ Gaufrettes series, inspired by the delicate, crispy layers of traditional Belgian waffles from her homeland. The colour filters between the layers of glass make the pieces shift and change depending on the light and the way you move around them.

Although these works may resemble paintings from a distance, they have much more in common with sculptures. For Janssens, art is about more than just looking – it’s an interactive experience where you move around the pieces and see how the colours change with the light.

The three Gaufrettes are arranged together as a triptych – a three-part piece inspired by traditional church art. However, instead of telling a religious story, the titles refer to the technical methods and colour codes Janssens used to create them. Yet, the works still carry a subtle religious undertone, with light taking on a near-divine quality, evoking wonder, curiosity, and beauty.
